Academic Background

  • B.A. University of California (Berkeley)
  • M.A. Syracuse University
  • Ph.D. University of Houston

Rhode Island College has been my academic home ever since I arrived a couple of decades ago with a new Ph.D. and a sheaf of poems. My area of specialization within the English department remains creative writing, particularly poetry. I also regularly teach Modern Poetry, Contemporary Poetry and an array of other literature courses.

At this point, I have published over 150 poems in over 75 literary journals, magazines, and anthologies, including The Best American Poetry, The Hudson Review, Ms. Magazine, The New Republic, The Paris Review, Ploughshares, Poetry, and The Women’s Review of Books. My short fiction and creative nonfiction have appeared in a couple of dozen publications, including Feminist Studies, Fiction, The New York Times, and The Southern Review. I have published three books of poetry: Lessons in Space, Bad Judgment, and Sleeping with a Famous Poet. My fourth, The Afflicted Girls, is forthcoming from Little Red Tree. I have been awarded The Nation Discovery Award, a Pushcart Prize, and the Thorpe Professorship at the College.

I like to think of myself as a working writer who works with writers. My greatest pleasure as a professor is seeing a student fall in love with a genre of writing, especially poetry since it’s often deemed as desirable as lima beans. In truth, poetry is double chocolate cheesecake.
