The mission of the M.Ed. in Reading graduate program at Rhode Island College is to prepare inquiring reading specialist practitioners who seek knowledge and experiences about reading/literacy processes and practices. These evolving scholars are guided and encouraged to pursue knowledge, commit to inquiry, engage in problem solving related to reading/literacy processes and practices and participate as leaders in reading/literacy-related activities. The inquiring reading specialist practitioners learn to use reading/literacy knowledge, practices, and processes to serve the changing needs of a population existing in technological, diverse, and dynamic local and global environments.
As a M.Ed. in Reading candidate, you will work closely with full-time faculty members with specialization and advanced degrees in Reading. Furthermore, our courses provide you with K-12 hand-on experiences that offer practical teaching suggestions such as working with culturally diverse students and special populations. The M.Ed. in reading at Rhode Island College is a thirty-six-semester hour program that leads to K-12 certification as a Reading Specialist in the State of Rhode Island.
The program is nationally recognized and approved by both the International Reading Association (IRA) and the National Council for Accreditation for Teacher Education (NCATE).

- use instructional approaches, materials, and an integrated, comprehensive, balanced curriculum to support student learning in reading and writing.
- use a variety of assessment tools and practices to plan and evaluate effective reading and writing instruction.
- create and engage their students in literacy practices that develop awareness, understanding, respect, and a valuing of differences in our society
- create a literate environment that fosters reading and writing by integrating foundational knowledge, instructional practices, approaches and methods, curriculum materials, and the appropriate use of assessments.

- A completed application form accompanied by a fifty-dollar nonrefundable application fee. Forms may be obtained from the office of the academic dean responsible for the program to which the student is applying.
- Official transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate records. The dean’s office will obtain any Rhode Island College transcripts.
- A minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of B (3.00 on a 4.00 scale) in all undergraduate course work. Applicants with undergraduate GPAs less than 3.00, may be admitted to degree candidacy upon the submission of other evidence of academic potential, for example, satisfactory performance in postbaccalaureate work, professional experience as evidenced by publications or letters of recommendation, and/or high scores on the standardized tests.
- A copy of candidate’s teaching certificate (when applicable).
- An official report of scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) for most programs. See specific programs for exceptions.
- Three letters of recommendation attesting to the candidate’s potential to do graduate work. Placement references are generally not applicable.
- One year of professional teaching experience.
- An interview.
