I graduated with a degree in Political Science and a minor in Elementary Education from Notre Dame College, now the Liberal Arts College of St. John's University on Staten Island in NYC. I continued my education at Wagner College in NY while teaching in the NYC public school system in the second, third and fifth grades. I earned more than 30 credits in Education courses sponsored by the NYC Board of Education. After I received my Masters in Elementary Education degree from Wagner College, I was employed by NYC as a Reading Improvement Teacher. I moved to Rhode Island and taught third grade in Providence at the Asa Messer School and was a school librarian at the E W Flynn Model School while continuing my education at the University of Rhode Island where I received my Master of Library Science degree. I was the Director of the School Library at the Henry Barnard Laboratory School on Rhode Island College's campus. In 1976 I received my Doctor of Arts degree from Simmons College in Boston.
In 1978, I studied in Egypt with a Fulbright-Hays scholarship and the following year studied with other American professors in China. I taught Children's Literature in the undergraduate and graduate school at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island. I have been teaching in the Department of Elementary Education at Rhode Island College since 1994. Last year I was the recipient of the RIC Alumni Association Faculty Award for excellence in teaching and service to the college. I also received the Bucci Family Award for excellence in teaching and service to the college in the Feinstein School of Education and Human Development. This past summer I received the Alliance for the Study and Teaching of Adolescent Literature at Rhode Island College, Joan I. Glazer award for excellence in bringing literature to children and adolescents.
