Frequently Asked Questions

When can I apply to the Elementary Education (ELED) Program?

Students apply to the Elementary Education Program while you are taking FNED 346 (as early as the second semester of your freshman year). You must have at least 24 credits by the end of the semester in which you are applying to ELED. Watch for your FNED 346 professor to make an announcement about a meeting. The meeting will be held on a Wednesday at 12:30, early in the semester. When you attend that meeting you will be given an application and you will learn more about the program and the important up and coming deadlines.

How do I apply to the Elementary Education Program?

You will get an application folder, at the information meeting held while you are taking FNED 346, but you can also get it online at FSEHD ADMISSIONS PAGE. Your application folder will have everything in it that you need. You will find the application form and a list of requirements:
  • PPST (Praxis I) in Mathematics, Reading, and Writing
  • a scored Career Commitment Essay
  • Technology Competency (take the test or the course)
  • the Rhode Island College Mathematics and Writing requirements
  • two Disposition Reference Forms (one from your FNED professor and one from the person who supervised your work with children)
  • an overall 2.50 Grade Point Average (G.P.A.)
  • transcripts from all colleges attended, even your current RIC transcript
  • earn at least a B- in your FNED 346 class

Can I register for ELED courses before being accepted?

You can register for the upcoming semester for ELED 300 (elementary) or ECED 301 and ECED 419 (early childhood) while you are applying to the program. If you are not accepted then you will be dropped from those courses.

What if my G.P.A. falls below 2.5?

You must have at least a 2.50 Grade Point Average to be in the Elementary/Early Childhood Program. If your G.P.A. drops below then you cannot continue in our program and may have to reapply. You will have an opportunity to meet with our Retention Committee to discuss your situation.

Do I take all my GenEds before applying to the Elementary Education Program?

No, do not take all your General Education classes before applying, if you do, you will not graduate in four years. The ELED classes are rigorous and time consuming (remember you will be writing lesson plans and teaching) with each ELED course. You will take one or two during a semester and can fill the rest of your credit hours with General education courses and/or courses for your major.
