Second Bachelor's Degree Programs
The 2nd Bachelor's degree is generally for those whose undergraduate GPA on their 1st Bachelor's degree transcript is in the range of 2.5-3.0 and who complete other admission requirements including cutoff scores on the Assessment of Basic Skills for the Feinstein School of Education and Human Development. Candidates apply for this degree through the RIC Admissions Office. There is a double admission process, to the College through the Admissions Office and later to the Feinstein School of Education and Human Development through the undergraduate admission process. This program is individualized, depending on candidate background, and generally runs between 45-80 credits and is completed in a minimum of 4 semesters.
Candidates will meet with an advisor to set up a plan of study for this program.
Those already holding a 1st Bachelor's degree in a subject other than an Elementary Education Content Major (English, French, General Science, Mathematics, Social Studies, Spanish, Geography, History, Political Science, Political Science, or Theatre) or those without sufficient credits in General Education/ Liberal Arts will be required to take a Content Major or a Teaching Concentration in Special Education together with the program in elementary education.
Once admitted to the 2nd Bachelor's degree program, only CEP 315, ELED 300, any undergraduate prerequisite courses designated on a plan of study, and courses in the content major or teaching concentration can be taken before program admission.

Prior to Admission
If any of the following courses are required by your Plan of Study, only these may be taken before admission to the Feinstein School of Education and Human Development:
- FNED 346: Schooling in a Democratic Society [4 credits]
- CEP 315: Educational Psychology 
- MATH 143: Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers I 
- MATH 144: Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers II 
- POL 201: Development of American Democracy 
- BIOL 109: Fundamental Concepts of Biology 
- PSCI 103: Physical Science 
- ECED 301: Developmental Approaches to Teaching and Learning  (Early Childhood Education introductory course)
- OR ELED 300: Concepts of Teaching  (Elementary Education introductory course)

- A minimum overall grade point average of 2.50 each semester.
- A minimum grade of B- in Elementary Education 300 or Early Childhood Education 301, and recommendation to continue from the instructor.
- A minimum grade of B- in all other professional courses, and a recommendation to continue from the instructors. Courses in the department may be repeated once with a recommendation to retake from the previous instructor.
- A minimum GPA in all content courses offered in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.
- Students accepted into the Department of Special Education and the Department of Elementary Education must maintain concurrent retention in both departments.
Records of students who do not maintain good standing or who receive a Recommendation to Continue with Concerns are reviewed by the departmental retention committee. Students may be dismissed from the program. Appeal of a decision to dismiss a student is made to the dean of the Feinstein School of Education and Human Development.
