English Department
The English Department at Rhode Island College teaches students to read, write, and think critically and creatively. As a faculty, we strive to integrate teaching, scholarship, and writing. English faculty bring a diverse set of pedagogical and theoretical approaches to a broad range of readings, questions, and practices in order to teach students to think, read, and write with clarity and precision. In English, the classroom is a dynamic environment dedicated to understanding texts in terms of their literary, cultural, and historical contexts. We prepare our majors, minors, and graduate students to enter advanced degree programs and to pursue teaching or other careers in which the ability to read and write effectively is crucial. We encourage our students to see themselves as active agents in achieving their academic and professional goals and to participate fully in the cultural and civic life of their communities.
