Background

Karen Lee Boren writes both fiction and creative nonfiction. Her work has appeared in numerous literary journals, including the Florida Review, Night Train, Karamu, Hawai’i Pacific Review, Cream City Review, and BookForum. Published in 2006, her novel Girls in Peril (Tin House Books) has been selected for the Barnes and Noble Discover Great New Writers program.

In both my writing and literature classes, I work to ignite intellectual curiosity in my students and to provide them with the means to examine new ideas and to articulate complex thoughts. I have found that one of the greatest challenges of teaching is to move students from the exhilaration of inspiration to the discipline of craft. Therefore, I structure my courses so students come to understand that learning is largely an inquisitive process.
