English Faculty Writing Awards

Critical and Creative Writing
$1800 Each Scholarship

Eligibility: Any English major of at least sophomore standing who will continue as a student at RIC in Fall 2011.
How to apply: Submit to Ms. Aywas in CL 264
  • Portfolio (either critical or creative writing) of no more than 20 pages in which the student's name does not appear the portfolio should be labeled "critical" or "creative."
  • Cover sheet with your name, address, phone number, and student ID.
Student may submit two portfolio, one for each category.

Donald F. Lyons Scholarship

$1200 Scholarship
Elgibility: Any full-time junior or senior English major with the desire and evidence of aptitude to enter the field of teaching who will continue as a student at RIC in Fall 2011.
How to apply: Submit to Ms. Aywas in CL 264
  • Letter of interest
  • Transcript
  • Letter of recommendation from an English faculty member

Amy Thompson Prize in Children's Literature

$100 Award
Eligibility: Students majoring or minoring in English with an interest in reading, teaching, writing, and/or scholarship on children's literature.
How to apply: Submit to Ms. Aywas in CL 264
  • Brief statement (1-2 page, approximately 300-600 words) about your interest in children's literature
  • Transcript

John J. Salesses Scholarship

$670 Scholarship
Eligibility: Any declared English major who will have at least junior standing in Fall 2011, with a focus in British or American literature and a GPA of 3.0, who will continue as a student at RIC in Fall 2011.
How to apply: Submit to Ms. Aywas in CL 264
  • 1-2 page statement about your interest in British or American Literature
  • Transcript
