English Department

The English Department at Rhode Island College prepares students to achieve their academic, and professional goals by helping them to read, write, and think critically and creatively. We promote meaningful engagement with and understanding of language and texts in their literary, cultural, and historical frameworks. We present our students with a variety of pedagogic and theoretical approaches in a broad range of courses and individualized directed study programs. Our majors, minors, and graduate students are well prepared to enter advanced degree programs or to pursue careers in any field in which the ability to read and write the English language effectively and sensitively is crucial. As a faculty, we affirm the integral relation among teaching, scholarship, and writing. We encourage students to see themselves as active agents in their personal and professional growth and to prepare themselves to participate fully in the cultural and civic life of their communities.
