Workshops

The ESL workshops, offered at Rhode Island College every fall and spring, are designed for students who want to develop their speaking, listening, writing, and reading skills for academic, professional, and/or personal use. Teachers in the program draw on a communicative and student-centered approach to meet these needs. Structured conversations, web searches, simulations, oral presentations, games and role-plays are some of the activities in which students are expected to be actively involved.

Textbooks of the same series are used at all levels of instruction in order to provide a maximum core vocabulary and familiar structure on which students will be able to build their oral and writing language skills. Each workshop is a semester long (15 weeks). Classes meet for 8 hours a week on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights from 7:00 p.m. to 8:50 p.m.

How do I know what level I should be in?

Placement at the appropriate level is determined by a diagnostic test that is given to all entering students. These language tests are free of charge and they last approximately three hours. They are administered about two weeks before the beginning of classes (late August for fall and middle of January for spring).

How do I register for a test? How do I register for classes?

Contact Dr. Andrés Ramírez, coordinator of the program to schedule a date for the test. Once you have taken the test, we will provide instructions for registration.

How much does it cost?

The cost for each workshop is $500. The cost for the books is approximately $170. If you take the classes for credit, normal tuition rates and fees apply.

What classes do you offer?

The program consists of three levels. See description at left.
