Title: Sociology and the Holocaust

Information on local Holocaust memorials, museums, and remembrance services
Memorials/Museums
I encourage you to visit at least one Holocaust memorial or museum during the semester. If you can not, you should at least try to spend some time exploring websites of Holocaust museums. The following are four local memorials or museums that may be convenient for you, though of course you are welcome to go anywhere you like. If you know of someplace local that I've missed, let me know so I can add it to this page.

The Westchester Holocaust Education Center Garden of Rememberence (located in downtown White Plains)
Holocaust Memorial Park in Sheepshead Bay (directions)
The Holocaust Memorial and Education Center of Nassau County (located in Glen Cove)
The Museum of Jewish Heritage: A Living Memorial to the Holocaust (located in downtown Manhattan at Battery Park City)

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. is also a great museum to visit. See the announcements page about an opportunity to go as part of a Queens College group.

Remembrance Services:
Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) begins the evening of April 25, 2006.On or around that day, many religious groups, civic organizations, and local communities hold rememberence services. I encourage you to attend at least one such event. A list of area services is posted here (more will be added if information becomes available); others surely exist in your community and you can call around and find out.

These services are arranged by neighborhood and date.
