Mikaila Mariel Lemonik Arthur Instructions for Students who Need a Reference Letter
----------------------------------------------------------------
In order to ensure that I can be as helpful as possible to students who need a reference letter or recommendation form for scholarships, graduate study, or other purposes or who would like to ask me to serve as a telephone reference for employment applications, I have developed a set of instructions for requesting such things from me. Please email or call (contact information is available on my home page) if you have any questions. Please also be aware that I reserve the right to refuse to serve as a reference if I don't have time to do a good job or if I don't think I would be the best person to recommend you.

Please package all of the materials indicated below with a cover letter telling me what you are applying for, why you are applying for it, and what sorts of things you would especially like me to say about you. This letter can be as short as a paragraph or so. The packets should be left in my department mailbox or brought to me directly in my office during office hours. If you are unable to come in to the department, you may email or postal mail these documents (but be sure to leave additional time for the receipt of postal mail).

If I have written letters for you in the past, I will generally keep a copy of what I have written; to request a new letter, just let me know what has changed and what new accomplishments you have since the last letter I wrote. Also be sure to check the box waiving your right to see your letters--many organizations won't take a reference letter seriously without it. I am always happy to discuss what I am writing about you in person.

For a reference letter or recommendation form
Please give me the following materials, ideally at least 3 weeks before the letter/form will need to be mailed out or returned to you (it will need to be mailed at least 2-3 days before the postmark deadline, and at least a week before the "received by" deadline):
--A copy of any instructions or forms I will need to fill out
--An unofficial copy of your transcript, or a list of college courses you have taken and the grades you have earned in them. If you have one semester or less of college, provide me some information about how you did in high school.
--A copy of your resume, or a list of jobs, volunteer positions, and student/community activities you have been involved in. It may be helpful to provide an estimate of how many hours a week you spend on these activities.
--If the application requires an essay or personal statement, please provide me with a copy of it (drafts are okay).

If you are asking me to serve as a telephone reference
Please give me the following materials, ideally as soon as you know that you will need me to be a reference and definately at least a week before I might be contacted.
