By Dick Evans, 7-6-2005

The content page in WebCT makes it easy to load a number of useful =
bits of=20
information for a student to view. And each time they access one of the =
links,=20
they are tracked so the professor can check up on who linked out to =
which file=20
and how often.

The one flaw in this approach is that the links must be to HTML =
files. Most=20
of our work might be saved as Word documents or even PDF files. The =
links work=20
but the tracking feature does not.

Here is a simple method to use to get your .doc and .pdf links to =
track.

1. Upload the file you want the student to link to MyFiles

2. Using notepad (or any other text editor), copy/paste the following =
lines=20
of HTML code:

<DIR>
<DIR><FONT face=3D"Courier New" size=3D2>

<meta http-equiv=3D"Refresh" content=3D"0;URL=3D

yourfile.pdf

">

WebCT Content Link

Please Wait!

</DIR></DIR>

3. Replace yourfile.pdf with the name of the file you =
uploaded. Be=20
sure to include the file extention as well as the name =96 the .doc or =
.pdf

4. Save this file with the same name as yourfile, but with the =

extension .htm

5. Upload yourfile.htm to MyFiles

6. Add yourfile.htm as the link on your contents page and =
change the=20
title to read whatever you want the students to see.

When the student clicks the link on the content page, they open=20
yourfile.htm and that action is tracked. Yourfile.htm=20
automatically opens the other file and they view the .doc or .pdf file =
as they=20
did before.
