RIC Faculty leading embedded professional development
This policy was created to encourage long-term collaboration between FSEHD faculty and practitioners in various education and human services fields. We recognize that one-time PD events do not serve many school districts and community organizations' needs. The policy allows a faculty member to contribute his or her expertise to activities directly connected to practice, team work, curriculum implementation, on-going assessment and continuous improvement.
Any local educational organization may request reassigned time for a
full-time FSEHD faculty member up to 3 FLH per semester to lead embedded professional development projects with practitioners, in-load or overload. Requests must be negotiated first with the specific faculty member, and then approved by chairs, program coordinators, the School, and
the College. Faculty members can secure institutional approval by submitting the
Proposal Summary and Approval Form (PSAF). Projects must not impact negatively offering of regular on-campus classes. Reassigned faculty member will be asked to provide a report on the outcomes of the collaborative activity.
The Dean's Office needs a written commitment by the requesting organization to compensate FSEHD at the rate of $1500 per FLH. This constitutes the minimal cost of replacement faculty teaching, and is significantly subsidized by the College. We therefore can only approve projects with meaningful and impactful collaboration. This arrangement does not cover any college or CEU credit for teachers taking the professional development. One FLH equals 1-2 hour of physical presence on location per week, and up to 3 hours of total work commitment per week. However, faculty members are free to negotiate the scope of work, and expectations with the organization requesting their service. The requesting organization will be asked to sign
a standard contract with RIC.
