Louis Appleton Memorial Scholarship Fund. Established in 1986 by the choirs of Sayles Memorial Church in Lincoln and Hope Congregational Church in East Providence in memory of Louis Appleton, a 1972 graduate of Rhode Island College. Awarded annually to a sophomore or junior music major that has piano or voice as a concentration. Preference given to students who are currently active in church music. $6,797

Donald C. Averill Memorial Scholarship Fund. Established in 1992 in memory of Donald C. Averill, founder of the Rhode Island College Chapter of the American Federation of Teachers, Local 18919, AFL-CIO. Awarded to an academically qualified junior who shows evidence of substantial contributions to the life of the College through participation in student activities and other endeavors. $18,906

Bicho Family Endowed Scholarship Fund. Established in 1979 to honor Professor Emerita Rita V. Bicho, a thirty-year member of the Rhode Island College music faculty on the occasion of her retirement. Four scholarships may be awarded annually in the following: keyboard; brass, wind, percussion; vocal, and strings. $127,085

Elisa F. Bonaventura ’49 Memorial Scholarship. Established in 1990 by family and friends in memory of Elisa F. Bonaventura, professor of Special Education for thirty years.  Award made through the department of special education. $7,873

S. Elizabeth Campbell ’31 Scholarship Fund. Established in 1972 by the friends and colleagues of S. Geraldine Carley Endowed Scholarship for Aspiring Early Childhood Teachers Fund.  Established in 2006.  Recipient must be enrolled full time and has a declared major in the early childhood education program and is entering their sophomore, junior, or senior year, had a 3.0 GPA at RIC in the previous year, a RI resident, and demonstrates need as determined by the Office of Financial Aid.  $11,254

Class of 1955 Scholarship Fund.  Established by the Class of 1955 in celebration of their Golden Anniversary, in memory of deceased members of the class.  Recipients of the three scholarships must be full-time undergraduates who have been accepted into the education curriculum and is entering their sophomore, junior, or senior year.  Must also be a RI resident, with a GPA of 2.75 in the previous year at RIC, and has financial need as determined by Financial Aid. $45,630

Margaret I. Coutts Memorial Scholarship Fund. Established in 1980 with an estate gift from Margaret I. Coutts   ’40 and enhanced through other general gifts to scholarship, including a gift from Mrs. Mario Geremia in memory of her husband Mario.  $96,738

Mary Davey Scholarship Fund. Established in 1983 by the family and friends of Mary Davey on the occasion her retirement as Director of Alumni Affairs and Public Relations for 25 years. Awarded annually to a student of high scholastic achievement who is entering his/her second year of graduate work in the School of Social Work and who displays an interest in the field of child welfare. $9,822

Richard Dawson Memorial Scholarship Fund. Established in 1991 by Rita Dawson Lloyd ’36 in memory of her brother Sergeant Richard Dawson who was killed on D-Day in the invasion of Normandy. Awarded to an academically qualified student on the basis of need. $40,825

Alma Bishop Doley '30 Endowed Scholarship. Established in 1996 by Alma Bishop Doley '30 to recognize and honor Rhode Island College and the contributions the College made to her quality of life. This scholarship will assist an academically qualified student who demonstrates financial need and strong character. $15,937

C. Annette Ducey Scholarship.   Established in 2004 by an estate bequest from the trusts of Ingamar and C. Annette Ducey.  Awarded annually to an undergraduate of at least sophomore standing majoring in English on the basis of merit and need.  $716,406

Debra A. Dumont Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund. Established in 1994 by the family and friends of Debra A. Dumont, a senior nursing student who was killed just prior to her graduation. Awarded on the basis of need to a junior or senior full-time nursing student with caring qualities. The student must be working while completing his/her degree and must be committed to nursing as a career. $11,987

Aime J. and Gertrude B. Forand Scholarship Fund. Established with a gift from Gertrude B. Forand, wife of the late Congressman Aime J. Forand, and Angelina Trahan. Scholarships awarded annually to students who qualify on the basis of need.  In addition, a prize is awarded annually to a student who graduates with honors in Political Science. $191,831

Helen Forman '34 Special Talent Endowed Scholarship Fund.  Established in 1999 with a gift from Helen Forman '34 to support three annual full tuition scholarships to attract and retain the most talented students in the areas of music, theatre, and dance.  $2,306,440

Sylvan and Helen Forman ’34 Endowed Music Scholarship Fund. Established in 1992 in memory of Sylvan Forman by his wife Helen. Awarded on the basis of need to a full-time undergraduate sophomore or junior who is pursuing a degree in music. $734,173

Sarah T. Foster Alpha Delta Kappa Scholarship. Established in 1989 with a gift from the Rhode Island Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority in honor of Mrs. Sarah T. Foster for her excellence in teaching in Rhode Island, including the Henry Barnard School, and for her outstanding contributions to Alpha Delta Kappa, an honorary sorority for women educators. Awarded annually to a full-time undergraduate, entering at least the third year, who has been accepted into the School of Education and is planning a career in teaching. $17,672

Patricia Galvin ’62 and Dee McCarthy ’62 Endowed Scholarship Fund.  Established in 2000 by Patricia Galvin Marchetti ’62 and her husband Edward, to honor Pat’s friendship with her classmate, Dee McCarthy Merrill Keenan ’62, who died in 1996.  The courtyard adjacent to the John Nazarian Center for Performing Arts has been named in their honor.  In addition, a scholarship will be awarded annually to a student pursuing a degree in physical or health education. $121,420

Mark E. Goldman Theatre Scholarship. Established in 1995 by the family and friends of Mark E. Goldman.  Awarded annually to a student who, in the basis of an audition, shall be judged superior in the performing arts with an emphasis on acting. $54,821

Michael Gonsalves ’86 Memorial Fund.  Established in 2003 in memory of Michael Gonsalves, a RIC graduate and disc jockey for WHJY, who died in the Station nightclub fire in February 2003.  Awarded to victims of the Station Fire and their families or to fraternity brothers of Kappa Delta Phi and their direct relations.  $156,106

Deborah Griffin Family Memorial Scholarship Fund.  Established in 2001 in memory of Deborah Griffin, a music education student at Rhode Island College, and four of her five children who died tragically in a fire at their Providence home on December 8, 2000.  The Griffin scholarship will provide students from Providence public schools, with preference to those from the E.W. Flynn Elementary School, the opportunity for private instrumental or vocal instruction. Awards will be based on talent and financial need.  $15,749

Harman Endowed Award for Economics.  Established in 2006 by family, friends, and colleagues in memory or Peter Harman and his commitment to a 34 year teaching career.  Awarded to an Economics major who has completed both Intermediate Micro and Macro Economics prior to his or her senior year and has a GPA of 3.25.  $18,568

David M. Harris Endowed Fund. Established in 2000 by family and friends in memory of Professor David M. Harris.  Awarded annually to full time students who are of at least junior standing, demonstrate need and have maintained an overall 3.0 GPA. Myrtle Karlin ’24 Scholarship Fund. Established in 1988 through a bequest from Myrtle Karlin, Pawtucket, RI, an alumna of Rhode Island College of Education, Class of 1924. Awarded to full-time Rhode Island College students who are graduates of Shea and Tolman High Schools and who demonstrate need. $166,059

Mary M. Keeffe ’28 Scholarship Fund. Established in 1980 in recognition of Dr. Mary M. Keeffe’s contributions to the Department of Biology and in recognition of Dr. Keeffe’s role in encouraging the study of science among young people as one of the founders of the Science Fair. Awarded annually to biology major in good academic standing that plans to pursue a career in the biological sciences. $6,083

John A. Kelly ’85 Theatre Scholarship Fund. Established in 1987 by John A. Kelly to lessen the financial burden of the recipient during the senior year. Awarded to an academically qualified theatre major in his/her junior year. Preference is given to Rhode Island residents. $8,712

Thomas G. King Scholarship Award. Established in 1980 to honor Dr. Thomas G. King, who served as the Chair of the Industrial Arts Department for 12 years. Awarded annually to an academically qualified Industrial Arts Education major in his/her sophomore or junior year who has demonstrated interest and participation in the activities of the Industrial Education Department. $114,523

Victoria Lederberg Endowment.  Established in 2003 in memory of the Honorable Victoria Lederberg, a Rhode Island Supreme Court Justice and former Professor of Psychology at Rhode Island College. Purpose yet to be determined.   $13,129

Leonelli Family Memorial Scholarship Fund. Established in 1982 by the members of the Leonelli Family in memory of Filomeno, Lucia, Joseph and Ermanno Leonelli. In 2001 the endowment had grown to a level which could support an annual scholarship. Awarded annually to a student in Modern Languages, with first preference to a student studying Italian. $14,733

Rita '36 and London Lloyd Endowed Fund in Theatre.  Established in 1998 to fund an annual award for a graduate student in theatre.  $32,402

Mary E. Love Scholarship Fund. Established in 1980 by Mary E. Love, a registered nurse who received a Bachelor of Education and a Master’s of Education from Rhode Island College. Two awards are made annually to fulltime undergraduate students who have been accepted into the nursing major at Rhode Island College, are in good academic standing, and receive above-average clinical evaluations. $85,941

Joseph R. Lunt Science Scholarship.  Established in December 2001 by Mary C. Rogers, a 1939 graduate of Rhode Island College and professor emerita, Eastern Connecticut State University.  The scholarship will be awarded to a student majoring in elementary education with a concentration in science.  Formerly named the Mary C. Rogers ’39, ’51 Endowed Scholarship Fund, the name was changed in 2005 by the donor.  $32,957

Mary F. Luzzi Scholarship Fund.  Established in 2000 by Mary's family and friends to honor her dedicated service to the Rhode Island College community.  This fund will provide an opportunity for women to continue their personal and professional growth by pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in the academic field of their choice.  $12,620

Donald F. Lyons Scholarship Fund.  Established in August 1997 with a gift from the estate of  Donald F. Lyons.  Purpose to support a scholarship for juniors or seniors who are pursuing an English undergraduate degree and who express the desire and aptitude to enter the field of teaching.  $40,091

Ida Maiello Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund. Established by Dolores Maiello Ciambrone in loving memory of her mother, Ida Maiello. Awarded on the basis of need to a Rhode Island resident of Italian descent who is pursuing a degree in social work, sociology, psychology or a certificate in gerontology. $3,268

Martone.  Only the interest earnings to be expended to support a scholarship for an academically qualified graduate or undergraduate, who is a Rhode Island resident, and who is pursuing a degree in education with a desire to become a teacher.  $13,810

Lloyd Matsumoto Biology Fund.  Established in 2001 by Dr. Lloyd Matsumoto, Professor of Biology at Rhode Island College, his friends and colleagues.  The endowed scholarship will be used to provide financial support to Rhode Island College senior biology students seeking admission to graduate or professional schools.  $52,478

Dorothy Kelly McCartin ’43 Endowed Scholarship Fund.  Established in 2003 by the family of Dorothy McCartin to commemorate the 60th anniversary of her graduation from RICE.  Awarded annually to a student accepted into the Feinstein School of Education.  $27,659

Beverly McGinnis Scholarship Fund. Established by the Rhode Island College Student Community Government during the 1995-96 academic year to honor and reward students who have made significant contributions to community life, both on and off the Rhode Island College campus. These annual scholarships will be awarded to those who represent models of involved and committed students who can, simultaneously, balance academic demands while serving the larger community.   The fund name was changed in 2003, in memory of Ms. McGinnis, who worked in the Student Community Government Office. $57,701

Bertha McKee ’27 Endowed Scholarship in Health and Physical Education Fund.  Established in April 2002 by Bertha McKee and her friends in celebration of Miss McKee’s 95th birthday in September 2002.  Miss McKee was a teacher in the Rhode Island Public schools, most notably Hope High School in Providence, for more than 40 years.  The scholarship will be awarded annually to a student majoring in physical education or a health-related field.  $13,442

Lt. W. Lee Menconi '65 Endowed Scholarship.  Created by the family and friends of Lt. Menconi who was killed in action in Vietnam in 1968.  This scholarship honors his patriotism, military service, and commitment to his high school, college, teacher education and profession. Awarded annually to a graduate of Central Falls High School interested in a teaching career. $17,905

Rose Merenda Early Childhood Scholarship. Established in 1992 by Professor Rose Merenda. Awarded on the basis of need to students enrolled in grades K-2 at the Henry Barnard School. $18,229

Dr. Cheryl Ann and Dr. George Metrey Scholarship Fund.  Established in 2000 by family and friends in memory of Cheryl Ann Metrey and enhanced in 2004 upon the retirement of George Metrey as Dean of the School of Social Work.  This fund will support a student enrolled in the MSW program with preference to graduates of the Rhode Island College’s BSW program.  $19,515

John (Jack) ’73 & Patricia ’69 Milligan Endowed Scholarship.  Established in 2004 with a gift from John and Patricia Milligan.  Awarded annually to an undergraduate who has chosen to reenroll in college and has the responsibility of providing for a dependent child or children.  Preference given to a student pursuing a career in teaching.  $12,363

Marguerite C. Ormond Morey ’15 Memorial Scholarship Fund. Established in 1993 in memory of Marguerite C. Ormond ’15 by her niece, Virginia A. Wilcox ’43. Awarded to an academically qualified resident of Rhode Island who is at least a full-time sophomore and who is pursuing a career in teaching. $8,470

Celia Munir ’86 Scholarship Fund. Established in 1987 by Celia Munir on the first anniversary of her graduation from Rhode Island College. A granddaughter of a slave, Mrs. Munir established the scholarship to inspire and motivate minority students to continue or return to school to advance their education and complete a college degree. Two scholarships to be awarded annually to an adult returning student and a graduating high school senior on the basis of merit and financial need. $6,587

Mary E. Murphy Class of 1927 Scholarship for Elementary Education.  Established in 2005 in memory of Mary E. Murphy by an anonymous donor to honor Mary’s life long commitment to children.  Awarded annually to an undergraduate pursuing a career in elementary education on the basis of need.  $28,056

Christopher J. Naylor Endowed Memorial Scholarship Fund. Established in 1996 by the family and friends of Christopher J. Naylor, a 1995 graduate of Rhode Island College's Masters degree program in psychology. Shapiro in honor of his mother a teacher, counselor, school psychologist, and principal in the Providence School Department for 14 years prior to becoming a Professor at the Henry Barnard School, RIC for 33 years. Awarded annually to a first generation junior or senior enrolled in the elementary education curriculum, who demonstrates need and has maintained a minimum 3.5 GPA.
