Miscellaneous Endowed and Operating Funds

Anchor Fund. Established in 1983 to receive gifts in support of the athletic, intramural, and recreation program at Rhode Island College. $186,353

Art Education Award. Established in 2003. This award will be given to a graduating art education major based on excellence in student teaching. $2,420

Bannister Gallery Purchase Fund. Established in 1980 in an effort to provide ongoing support for the addition of art works to the gallery. $3,392

Stuart & Russell Chernick Memorial Fund. Established in 1981 in memory of Stuart Chernick by his family and friends. At the time of his death, Stuart was a ninth grade student at the Hugh B. Bain Jr. High School. His brother, Russell, a former RI poster child for muscular dystrophy, died at the age of 23. Russell was a RI College graduate, Class of 1981. Funds to be used to assist disabled students in their pursuit of higher education. $5,942

Annie Cohen Theatre Endowed Fund. Established in 1983 in memory of a faculty member's aunt whose love for theatre was a central part of her life. The fund was endowed in 1999 to support the needs associated with theatre. $11,003

Baltazar Lopes da Silva Fund. Established in 1991 with a gift from Thomas A. Lopes, publisher and general manager of the Cape Verdean News. Purpose is to purchase Cape Verdean materials, fund lectures in Cape Verde and Cape Verdean studies. $104

DeRobbio Endowed Fund. Established in 1994 by Tullio A. DeRobbio, member of the Foundation Board. This fund will be used to support OASIS. $87,201

Feinstein School of Education and Human Development. Established in August 1996 with an initial gift of $500,000 from the Feinstein Foundation and a second gift of $500,000 received in September 1997. This fund is to support the establishment of the Feinstein Enriching America Program at Rhode Island College. $1,339,219

Helen Forman '34 Performing Arts -President's Series Endowed Fund. Established in 1999 with a gift from Helen Forman '34 to support the President's Series component of the Performing Arts Series. This fund will enable the college to secure high caliber artists for four Chamber Music events annually. $419,611

Friends of the Adams Library. Fund established to receive gifts from the Friends of the Adams Library. $4,391

Golden Anniversary Fund. Established by various classes in celebration of their 50th anniversaries. Purpose yet to be determined. $4,465

Desiree Hoeneveld Endowed Fund to Support HBS Acquisitions. Established in 2007 by Douglas Shemin, nephew to Desiree, in her memory and especially in memory of her love of reading. The find would support the acquisition of materials, preferably books, for the Henry Barnard School Library. Book plates will be placed in each acquisition purchased with the proceeds of this fund and will reflect text of the donor's choosing. $9,334

Mary Juskalian Endowment for the Performing Arts Series. Established in 2000 with a gift from Mary Juskalian to support expenses related to the Performing Arts Series. $13,351

Ira Lough Endowed Fund. Established by the family and friends of Ira. J. Lough, a member of the Biology Department at Rhode Island College to provide long-term support of instructional materials and other resources for the Ira J. Lough student Resource Room. $8,685

Jerome B. Lynch Memorial Book Scholarship Fund. Established in 1989 in memory of Jerry Lynch. Funds to be used to purchase and expand the collection of books for the Slightly Older Students (SOS) Textbook Lending Library. $6,842

Henry and Jean Mergener Memorial Lectureship. Established by the Mergener family and their friends to fund a lectureship dealing with the issues of death and dying, with an emphasis on health care professionals and the rights and responsibilities of those who are dying. $13,756

Katherine Murray Endowed Fund. Established in 1993 by family and friends in memory of Katherine Murray, Professor of Anthropology and Education, and coordinator of the Brown Commemorative. The purpose of the endowment is to enrich the academic life of the College and inform the public through biannual programs of the issues of critical significance in education, teaching, and learning. $25,578

National Board Teacher Certification. Grant made from the Rhode Island Foundation to support the training of teachers pursuing National Board Certification. $704

Philomena Pelini and Vincent Pelene Fund. Established in 1985. Annual scholarship awarded based on financial need. $5,226

Poverty Institute. Established initially in 1999 with a grant from the Rhode Island Foundation to improve the lives of low-income Rhode Islanders by providing analysis, education and advocacy on issues affecting their economic well being. $371,201

Rhode Island College Student Nursing Association. $3,205.

Rhode Island College Symphony Orchestra Fund. Established in 1996 for the management of revenue and expenses incurred by the RIC Symphony Orchestra. $19,259

RI State Home and School Project. Established in 2002 to support the restoration of the “yellow cottage,” one of the original structures of the former State Home and School for Children. $30,733

Edith Scrivani '75. Established by Edith Scrivani. Purpose yet to be determined. $3,918

Matilda Segatore '29 Fund. Established through a bequest from Matilda Segatore and gifts from the family. Purpose yet to be determined. $6,186

Ridgway F. Shinn Jr. Study Abroad Fund. Established in 1987 by the family and friends of Ridgway F. Shinn Jr. on the occasion of his retirement after 29 years of service to Rhode Island College. Dr. Shinn was a professor of history, the first chair of the department of history, the first dean of arts and sciences, and vice president for academic affairs. Awarded to undergraduates in any field who are in good academic standing and who seek support to study abroad for a minimum of three months and a maximum of 24 months. $290,744

Silver Anniversary Fund. Established by the members of various classes on the occasion of their 25th anniversaries. $6,508

Mary A. Weber Fund. Established in 1960 through a gift from the Mary A. Weber estate. Professor Weber taught at Rhode Island College from 1924 until her retirement in 1952. The fund is to support “general uses and purposes” of Rhode Island College. $96,824
