New Endowments

Eighteen new endowment funds were established in 2006/2007.  They include:

  • Ernest C. & Dorothy H. Allison Endowed Scholarship.  Established in 2007 by Professor Emeritus of English Ernest Allison and his wife Dorothy.  The recipient must be an undergraduate student who demonstrates excellence in one of the performing arts: music, theatre, or dance; need may be considered in awarding the scholarship. $24,722

  • Doris Bettez ’42 Endowed Scholarship Fund.  Established in 2007 upon the death of Doris Bettez ’42 from her gift annuities to Rhode Island College.  Recipient must be accepted into the Feinstein School of Education and Human Development with preference given to an individual who is the first in his or her family to attend college. $53,929

  • Class of 1957 Scholarship.  Established in 2007 by the members of the Class of 1957 on the occasion of their 50th Anniversary.  Recipient must be a full time undergraduate in the nursing program who is a RI resident, entering their junior or senior year, and demonstrates need. $15,781

  • Margaret ’63 & Edward ’61 Day Endowed Scholarship for Elementary Education.  Established in 2006 by the children of Margaret and Edward Day, who were both teachers.  Recipient must be accepted into the Feinstein School of Education and Human Development enrolled in the elementary education program, has a GPA of 2.75 and demonstrates need; preference given to a graduate of Hope, Central, or Mt. Pleasant High Schools in the City of Providence. $14,610

  • Lillian Moura deMelo ’49 Scholarship in Education.  Established by Lillian Moura deMelo '49 in June 2003 in commemoration of RIC's Sesquicentennial anniversary and in honor of the teaching profession, especially the education of first-graders.  Full-time student who is a declared major in elementary education, in the early childhood program and planning to teach first grade, a RI resident-preferably from East Providence, and demonstrates financial need. $12,327

  • Department of Economics and Finance-Student Managed Investment Fund.  Established in 2006 with a gift of $100,000 from a grateful alumnus who wishes to remain anonymous.  The income from the student managed investment  fund will support requests for purposes to include faculty development experiences and enhanced educational programs for the Department, including faculty research, travel, and presentation of research papers at conferences and honoraria for invited lectures and educational presentations. $105,118

  • Norma DiLibero ’81 Endowed Fund.  Established in 2007 by Norma DiLibero ’81. $20,991

  • Helen Forman ’34 Endowment for Adams Library.  Established in 2007 with an estate gift from Helen Forman ’34 for the purchase of educational materials by the College Library. $222,229

  • Helen Forman ’34 Special Education Scholarship. Established in 2007 with an estate gift from Helen Forman ’34 for student scholarships in the Department of Special Eduaction.  $333,294

  • Desiree Hoeneveld Endowed Fund to Support HBS Acquisitions.  Established in 2007 by Douglas Shemin, nephew to Desiree, in her memory and especially in memory of her love of reading.  The find would support the acquisition of materials, preferably books, for the Henry Barnard School Library.  Book plates will be placed in each acquisition purchased with the proceeds of this fund and will reflect text of the donor's choosing. $10,115

  • Carol Horrocks ’56 Endowment for Art Education Scholarships.  Established in 2007 upon the death of Carol Horrocks. $11,799

  • Nancy Humes ’68 Endowed Scholarship for Mathematics.  Established in 2007 through an estate gift of Louis O. Humes, in honor of the memory of his daughter Nancy Humes, a member of the Class of 1968.   Recipients must major in mathematics and indicate their intention to teach mathematics on the secondary level; also based on achievement and need. $30,804

  • Elsie M. Hurley Scholarship Fund.  Established in 2006 by an anonymous donor in memory of her mother.  Purpose yet to be determined. $21,822

  • John Pellegrino Trumpet Fund.  Established in May 2003 in honor of the retirement of John Pellegrino, a professor in the Music, Theatre, and Dance department.  Awarded annually to a full-time brass student completing his or her first year of a music degree.  $13,552

  • Michelina Doretto Santos Upward Bound and Slightly Older Student Scholarship Fund.  Established in 2007 by a gift from Michelina’s husband Mathies Santos ’82 and their children.  This scholarship will provide two annual awards, one to an Upward Bound student who will be attending Rhode Island College and one to a Slightly Older Student who will also be attending the College.  $21,158 

  • John J. Smith ’42 and Anna Veronica Smith ’33 Endowed Scholarship.  Established in 2003 by John J. Smith ’63 and his mother Anna ’33.  Awarded annually to an academically qualified student majoring in education with a concentration in mathematics and display a genuine interest in teaching children.  The recipient must have attended Cumberland elementary schools or be a graduate of Cumberland High School.  $14,078
