PREFACE

We are pleased to present a second volume of proceedings from the meetings of the Finno-Ugric Studies Association of Canada. The volume is entitled FUSAC'91 ACÉFO: Proceedings of the Eighth Meeting of the Finno-Ugric Studies Association of Canada / Actes du Huitiéme Colloque de I'Association Canadienne des Études Finno-Ougriennes; it contains selected papers from our 1991 conference at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, along with summaries of the papers in French.

The majority of the papers in this volume originate in the special conference theme “”Transitions, Maintenance, and Adaptations of Cultural Values of the Finno-Ugric Immigrant Descendents in North America”. Several areas of Finno-Ugric studies are represented herein: history, biography, sociology, linguistics, and literature. Other papers are from the general session; these fall in the domain of linguistics and linguistic historiography.

In addition, there were presentations by Sheila Embleton, Tellervo Kähärä, Osmo Lahti, Seppo Lallukka, Hazel Lauttamus Birt, Timo Leisiö, Harri Mürk, Hain Rebas, Ahti Tolvanen and Martin Ahermaa (see Martin Ahermaa's contribution to the FUSAC/ACÉFO Newsletter, Spring 1992, no. 19); the absence of these papers from the present manuscript does not imply that they have been rejected through the review process or submitted for inclusion.

The conference also included a bookplate exhibit arranged by Emil Eermie and a concert of Finno-Ugric composers performed by soprano Tellervo Kähärä and pianist Dora Alanen.

We also extend our appreciation to Sheila Embleton and Juhani Härmä for the French translations, and we thank the man anonymous reviewers who have helped to assure the success of FUSAC '91 ACÉF0.
