Master of Education in Health Education

Mission Statement

Health education and health promotion are dedicated to enhancing the health and well being of populations through education and prevention initiatives.

  • The Rhode Island College Master of Education degree in Health Education prepares professionals to design, implement, and evaluate health education and health promotion programs and initiatives in school and community settings that address local, state, and national needs, and are culturally responsive.
  • Students in the program utilize theoretical models in assessing educational needs, designing educational and health promotion interventions, evaluating the effectiveness of program efforts, and advocating for evidence based, culturally responsive, and innovative prevention and promotion efforts.
  • Students will master health education and health promotion knowledge and skills, while developing professional values focused on health equity and social justice linked with supporting healthy outcomes for individuals, communities and populations.

The M.Ed. Degree in Health Education provides advanced academic skills for individuals employed or planning to seek employment as health educators and health promotion specialists in school, clinical, worksite, community, wellness, federal, state, and corporate settings.

The program follows the Responsibilities and Competencies for Health Education Specialists, a comprehensive set of Competencies and Sub-competencies defining the role of the health education/promotion specialist. If desired, graduates will be well prepared to take the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) exam.

Admission Requirements

School Nurse Teachers With Interest in a Maste​rs Degree

Students pursuing the Certification Review Pathway(CRP) leading to School Nurse Teacher Certification who are interested in completing the Masters of Education in Health Education will need to complete the currently approved program of study.

• Students who have successfully completed their first four courses in the CRP and have a GPA of 3.0 or greater will have the GRE requirement waived.

Important Information

A separate track for a Masters in Health Education with a Concentration in School Nurse Teacher Certification has received initial approved by Rhode Island College. This track has not yet been approved by the Rhode Island Department of Education. This program will be available only after approval by RIDE.​​​​​​
