History Secondary Education Program FAQs

What are the admissions requirements for the history secondary education program?

Once a student has completed twelve (12) credit hours in History, not including History 161 or any other History General Education course she or he make formal application to the Feinstein School. Please consult the current college catalog for a description of these courses. The student must possess a 2.5 overall GPA, 2.75 GPA in History, and a 2.75 in all required social science courses. Students must obtain an admission packet, located at various places on campus including the Dean’s Office in the School of Education, the Educational Studies Department, and Oasis, and carefully read the instructions for submitting all required materials. These materials include passing scores on the Praxis I exam, the PPST Test. Students must obtain a score of 170 Reading, 170 Math, 170 Writing. Students must demonstrate technology competency prior to admission by either achieving a passing score on all sections of the Technology Competency Exam or achievement of a C or better in INST 251. Prior to admission students must complete Foundations 346 with a grade of B- or better with two Disposition Reference forms. One Disposition Reference form must be provided by a college faculty member from FNED 346 familiar with the candidate’s academic performance. The second Disposition Reference form must be from the supervisor in FNED 346 familiar with the candidate’s service learning experience with youth or children. In addition, students must document their pre-professional experience with children or youth during the course of Foundations 346 (see instructions in the Admissions Portfolio). Students must complete a Career Commitment Essay and submit it to an evaluation committee. Students must complete the Rhode Island College Writing and Mathematics requirements. Students must provide an up to date set of transcripts. Candidates who transfer from another school must meet the same requirements and provide transcripts from schools previously attended. Only completed admission portfolios will be reviewed. Students need to be alerted that they are responsible for meeting the various dates and deadlines for exams and submission of materials set by ETS, the Department of Educational Studies, and the Feinstein School.

What do I need to get into practicum?

Students must pass the PRAXIS II Social Studies Content Exam (#0081) with a minimum score of 157 prior to Practicum. Our ideal score is 162 (which is required for licensure in the State of Connecticut). Students must also attempt the PLT exam prior to April 30 for fall admission and prior to October 30 for spring admission. They do not have to pass the exam, only attempt it, for entrance into Practicum. Students must maintain an overall GPA 2.5, History GPA 2.75, and Social Science GPA 2.75. Students must have a C or better in History 200 to maintain standing in the program in addition to all other requirements. Students must submit their content portfolios for review prior to Practicum. Please note students take SPED 433 with Practicum not before. The Practicum requires that the students keep their mornings open five days a week to accommodate class and field placements.

What do I need to get into student teaching?

Candidates must apply for student teaching no later than two semesters before taking the course. Students must pass the Praxis PLT exam with a minimum score of 167. In addition, candidates must have successfully completed all course work and maintained the GPA requirements set out in the first two sections prior to student teaching. Students must have achieved a minimum grade of C+ or better in History 362 and satisfy all other requirements to maintain standing in the program.
