Mentor Description

A mentor is a special, dedicated person who serves as a positive role model for a younger person, providing friendship, advice and academic support to students looking to improve their math skills, perception of math, and self confidence. The Hopkins Hill Mentors interact with their mentees on two levels; formally through the weekly Math Academy sessions and special events/projects as well as informally through a minimum of one lunch visit a semester and alternative communications. This is an unpaid, volunteer position.

Duties

  • Attend a mentor training session at Hopkins Hill Elementary School.
  • Meet with mentee once a week during Math Academy. The Math Academy meets on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 8:00 to 8:45 at Hopkins Hill Elementary School in Coventry. Mentors select one morning and commit to that morning for the semester.
  • Participate in one mentor & mentee project /event during the semester.
  • Visit the school a minimum of one time during the semester to have lunch with your mentee.
  • Participate in the Hopkins Hill campus visit in April by greeting students, participating in the tour etc. Attend one or two program meetings at Hopkins Hill and/or Rhode Island College.

Time Commitment

Mentoring begins in October. Throughout the semester, mentors meet with their mentees once a week from 8:00 to 8:45, arrange one or two lunch visits during the semester, and participate in one or two special projects/events.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Math 143 and Math 144 (for teacher candidates only)
  • Completion of BCI Check
  • Proficiency in multiplication, division, adding and subtracting fractions, factoring, algebra, and problem solving
  • Own transportation
  • Enthusiastic, good listener, friendly, reliable, talkative, and dedicated

Hopkins Hill Elementary School is located on 95 Johnson Boulevard in Coventry and is easily accessed off Route 95, Exit 6A.
