Submissions and Guidelines


Issues in Teaching and Learning, an on-line publication funded with support from the Faculty Development Fund, will publish its fifth volume at the end of the 2006-2007 academic year. The publication features articles by RIC faculty and staff examining issues and innovations in teaching and learning on campus. The mission of the journal is to create and deepen dialogue among the faculty and others about teaching and learning. We encourage manuscripts that raise issues, present innovations, challenge "common sense", take stands on controversies, and engage conversation among the readers. Articles should be anchored in existing literature and explicitly linked to the topics of teaching and learning. We are also interested in submissions that take advantage of electronic media linking the journal with faculty web pages, on-line course materials, and other files. Junior faculty are particularly encouraged to submit papers.

Why Submit?

Issues in Teaching and Learning supports other campus efforts to stimulate conversation about teaching and learning. These include faculty development workshops, programs on diversity, teaching awards, the work of the Writing Board, and other activities. In a four-month period, the journal received almost 25,000 hits. The electronic nature of the journal affords low-cost distribution of ideas and provides opportunities for cross-fertilization of innovations in teaching and learning. It typifies work being done nationally in the scholarship of teaching.

Who Can Submit?

Faculty, staff, students, and other members of the Rhode Island College community are encouraged to submit articles to the editorial board. We also welcome articles by college alumni and those that are co-authored with members of the college community.

Instructions To Authors

This journal has a rolling review process. We will accept manuscripts at any time during the period September 2006 through January 2007. Submissions must be made in electronic format. Article length should not exceed 15 pages, single spaced 12-point type, including charts, tables, references and/or footnotes. Papers considerably shorter than 15 pages are preferable. Authors should use the formatting style that is appropriate to their academic discipline. A double-blind peer review process is utilized, so article text should not identify the author(s). A separate cover page with identifying information should be included, and will be removed from the manuscripts sent to reviewers.

The editorial board will review manuscripts and select those for publication. Manuscripts will be reviewed and returned to the authors with anonymous comments within a two-month period.

Please consider joining the Editorial Board. We are looking for additional members. We are also looking for individuals willing to review manuscripts. If you are interested in organizing a Special Issue, please let us know. Of course, the future of this publication depends on the interest and support of the college community. Please consider publishing in our journal and being involved as a member of the Editorial Board, a reviewer or as a contributor.
