Students are responsible for meeting all graduation requirements; therefore, it is important that students consult with their advisor each semester before registering for courses.
The Department of Modern Languages offers a program in French for students who wish to become teachers as well as for those pursuing a liberal arts curriculum who wish to enter graduate programs in French Studies, or those who plan to use their knowledge of the French and Francophone language and culture in careers in such diverse areas as business, social work, government, law, translation, health care, media, and diplomacy.
No matter what RIC graduates do with their B.A. in French, they can be certain that they will have been offered a solid preparation in the French language and in the cultures and literature of France and the Francophone world.
The endorsement program in middle level education is for students who wish to teach in a middle school. Students seeking middle school endorsement must be enrolled in an elementary education or secondary education certification- granting program and must complete the requirements listed below.
French 201, 202, 330, 323 (or 324), 400, 420; one additional course at the 200 level or above.
In addition to the general graduation requirements (see page 220 of the 2000-2001 college catalog) French and Spanish Secondary Education applicants must maintain a minimum B average in their major, and an overall 2.5 grade point average in order to successfully complete the program. The Feinstein School of Education and Human Development requires all undergraduate students to participate in a community service experience, which may be completed on an individual basis or through one or more of the required courses in the undergraduate program For more information see the School of Education.
The secondary education program is supported by a strong advising system. Students should declare this program choice early in their college career at the Department of Educational Studies, where they will be directed to a program advisor in the major field. Students are required to meet with their program advisor to select appropriate General Education courses.
Students who already have the equivalent of the Rhode Island College undergraduate major in French may become eligible for Rhode island certification to teach French in Secondary schools by completing the requirements for the M.A.T. See the Secondary Education section of the RIC catalog.
