The endorsement program in middle level education is for students who wish to teach in a middle school. Students seeking middle school endorsement must be enrolled in an elementary education or secondary education certification- granting program and must complete the requirements listed below.
Spanish 201, 202, 321 (or 322), 330 (or 331), 400, 420; one additional course at the 200 level or above.
In addition to the general graduation requirements (see page 220 of the 2000-2001 college catalog) French and Spanish Secondary Education applicants must maintain a minimum B average in their major, and an overall 2.5 grade point average in order to successfully complete the program. The Feinstein School of Education and Human Development requires all undergraduate students to participate in a community service experience, which may be completed on an individual basis or through one or more of the required courses in the undergraduate program. For more information see the School of Education.
The secondary education program is supported by a strong advising system. Students should declare this program choice early in their college career at the Department of Educational Studies, where they will be directed to a program advisor in the major field. Students are required to meet with their program advisor to select appropriate General Education courses.
Students who already have an undergraduate degree with a major in Spanish may become certified to teach in secondary schools upon completion of the requirements for the M.A.T. See the Secondary Education section of the RIC catalog.
Masters in EducationCertified teachers of Spanish who wish to receive the M.Ed. with a concentration in Spanish should see the Secondary Education section of the RIC catalog.
