BackgroundKatie McNamara, a native Rhode Islander, got her BA in Dance and Anthropology from Connecticut College. During her college years, she was fortunate to study East African Folk Dance in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and Tai Chi and Chinese Folk Dance at the Beijing Dance Academy, China.
Soon after graduating, and moving to Philadelphia, she danced with Group Motion, Scrap Performance Group, and Leah Stein Dance Company, modern contemporary companies who encouraged her contribution to the creative process through choreography and improvisation. As a six year member of Group Motion she has had the opportunity to work with many fine international choreographers such as Carol Brown (England), Melanie Rios(Columbia), and Akiko Kitamura(Japan), providing her with a diverse range of true artistry. During this time, she was also active in Young Audiences, a program that brings workshops and performances to schools around the state, as well as, teaching dance in Philadelphia’s charter after-school programs and summer camps. She also co-founded the Bald Mermaids, named “best new modern dance company” by Philadelphia’s City Paper. She has shown her work in Philadelphia, Providence, New York City, as well as abroad in Germany and Poland. Her pieces, “Exo Faery” and “I know your breathing” were presented by the Philadelphia Fringe Festival.
She has had an eight-year career as a pilates teacher and presently teaches at and is certified through Jen McWalters Studio in Pawtucket, RI. In Spring 2008, Katie was honored to be a resident choreographer at Rhode Island College and continues her teaching there. Along with her husband, Olase Freeman, Katie co-directs their new company, Bald Soul.
