Background

Naum Panovski's professional theatre experience includes directorial and dramaturgical work on more than fifty productions produced by professional theatres in Europe and in the US. During his extensive career as artistic leader, director, or dramaturge he had the privilege of working with many distinguished artists such as Carl Weber, Maria Irene Fornes, Ted Hoffman, Richard Schechner, Joseph Chaikin, Jean Claude van Itallie, Paul Zindel, Goran Stafanovski, Dzevad Karahasan, Nenad Prokic, Ivo Bresan, Slobodan Snajder, to name just a few.

Dr. Panovski's theatre productions are shown at many international and regional festivals, including the Moscow Theatre Presentation, MESS Theatre Festival Sarajevo, Sterijino Pozorje, Ohrid Festival, Dubrovnik Festival, Istanbul Theatre Festival. He is the recipient of many awards for his directing achievements such as PortFolio Award (1996, Norfolk, VA), Macedonian National Theatre Festival Award (1988, Prilep, Macedonia), Jajce Theatre Festival Award (1987, Jajce, Bosnia), and many more.

He has taught various aspects of theatre practice and theory, drama and performing arts at Cyril and Methodius University in Skopje, Macedonia, The University of Texas at Dallas, The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Academy for Theatre Arts in Sarajevo and at other theatre institutions.

He has contributed numerous articles to various publications, participated on panels and symposia, and served on boards and in other artistic leadership positions. He has published two books: Theatre as a Weapon (1991, Kultura Publishing, Skopje, Macedonia) explores various issues of theatre structures and their relation to society; Directing Poiesis (1993, Peter Lang Publishing, New York) explores the art of directing from a theoretical, aesthetic, and practical perspective.
