Shanghai Quartet to perform at RIC Dec. 8
The Shanghai Quartet and Judith Lynn Stillman
The internationally celebrated Shanghai Quartet arrives at RIC for a concert in collaboration with Judith Lynn Stillman, piano virtuoso and artist-in-residence at RIC.
The quartet, known for its elegant musicality and masterful technique, will perform two concerts on Dec. 8 – at 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. – in the Nazarian Center’s Sapinsley Hall as part of the Wednesday Chamber Music Series at RIC.
The quartet was formed at the Shanghai conservatory in 1983, and debuted in Eastern Europe in 1985 and in New York in 1987. Since then, the ensemble has performed its appealing meld of eastern music and western repertoire at many of the major music centers around the world.
The ensemble, which has over 25 recordings, has also appeared in Woody Allen’s film “Melinda & Melinda” and the 2005 documentary “From Mao to Mozart: Isaac Stern in China.”
The quartet won the prestigious Chicago Discovery Competition in 1987 and came in second place at the London International Competition in 1985.
A question-and-answer session follows the performance.
