Big Sisters of RI to honor Nancy Carriuolo, May 14

Nancy Carriuolo
RIC President Nancy Carriuolo was recently named to the Big Sisters of Rhode Island's Magical Circle. Carriuolo will receive the honor at the organization's annual event, the Abracadabra Ball, on Saturday, May 14.

Established in 2007, the Magical Circle recognizes accomplishments of people in the community who are positive role models.

Carriuolo will be initiated into the Magical Circle for her leadership as the current president of RIC, and as the previous state coordinator of R.I. Women in Higher Education. Each year, only five local individuals receive the award.

“I am so honored that the organization plans to initiate me into their Magical Circle,” Carriuolo said. “Over the years I have been an informal mentor to many young people, and spent nearly a decade serving as a mentor to youngsters in the Upward Bound Program here at RIC. Playing a small part in the development of talented young women is very gratifying.”

Big Sisters of RI has been assisting at-risk girls through mentoring programs since 1966, and in 2010, began to service at-risk boys. According to the organization's website, Big Sisters of RI “envisions a community where all children are valued, nurtured, and safe” so they may “grow into strong and confident young adults ready to reach their full potential.”

Each year, the Abracadabra Ball is held to benefit mentored children throughout Rhode Island.

“I view it not only as a celebration but also as a way of supporting a very worthwhile organization,” said Carriuolo.

The Abracadabra Ball will be held at the Newport Hyatt Hotel, from 6:30 p.m. until midnight. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse and his wife will be chairing the event. The ball will include dinner, dancing and both live and silent auctions. Proceeds from the Abracadabra Ball will support mentoring programs that Big Sisters of RI will hold throughout the year.
