Muir String Quartet, soprano Lucy Shelton to perform March 28

Muir String Quartet
The Muir String Quartet, in its 18th season as part of the Performing Arts Series at RIC, will perform with soprano Lucy Shelton on Monday, March 28. The show will be held in the Nazarian Center’s Sapinsley Hall at 7:30 p.m.

According to The New York Times, Shelton’s performance is “warm and engaging, with a nice sense of drama and in fine balance with the strings.”

The program will include Haydn String Quartet No. 66 in G Major, Op. 77, No. 1; Respighi Il tramonto for Voice and String Quartet, P. 101, “The Sunset;” and Dvorak String Quartet in A-flat Major, Op. 105.

Regarded as one of the best string ensembles in North America, Muir is celebrating its 32nd year in 2011. The quartet has been in residence at Boston University's School of Music since 1983.

Muir continues to please audiences with “impeccable voicing and intonation” (San Francisco Examiner) and “exhilarating involvement” (Boston Globe). The ensemble’s recorded works have earned a Grammy, a Grammy nomination, two Grand Prix du Disques and a Gramophone award.

Muir's recently recorded pieces include Richard Danielpour’s “Feast of Fools,” Lucas Foss’ String Quartet No. 4, Ezra Laderman’s String Quartets No. 9 and No. 10, Joelle Wallach’s String Quartet No. 3 and Ronald Perera’s first Quartet.

Reynolds, a founding member of Muir, earned an honorary doctorate from RIC in 1995. He is the artistic director of the Classics for Kids Foundation, a program Muir supports that matches grants for string programs and instruments for young musicians nationwide.

Muir is the resident chamber ensemble at the Deer Valley Festival in Utah, and appears annually at major chamber music series in North America and Europe.

Tickets for the Muir String Quartet are $35. Discounts are available for seniors, children and RIC faculty/staff/students/alumni.
