RIC music students to perform in Opera Workshop at St. Ann Arts and Cultural Center
Rhode Island College’s Department of Music, Theatre, and Dance brings its Opera Workshop to the St. Ann Arts and Cultural Center in Woonsocket on Saturday, April 16, at 7:30 p.m.
The RIC Opera Workshop offers students the opportunity to study the art form of opera – from music to presentation, repertoire, vocal technique, stage movement and staging. The workshop is a two-semester (fall and spring) intensive study program.
During the fall semester, students participate in master classes with world-renown artists in the field including John Mario Di Costanzo, Edward Markward (Opera Workshop co-director), Diana McVey, Mary Philips ’86, Susan Rodgers (Opera Workshop co-director), Maria Spacagna, Fred Sullivan Jr., Angelica Vessella ’97 and Bill Wilson.
The spring semester allows student to put into practice all that they learned in the previous semester. Students learn and stage scenes from several classic and contemporary operas and then present them in performances all over the state.
This year, 21 RIC music students will perform in the Opera Workshop.
Scenes will include "Giulio Cesare" by George Frideric Handel; "The Consul by Gian-Carlo Menotti"; "Così fan tutte," "Die Zauberflöte" and Act II of "Le nozze di Figaro" by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; "Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor" by Otto Nicolai; "Dialogues des Carmélites" by Francis Poulenc; "La Traviata" by Giuseppe Verdi; and "Street Scene" by Kurt Weill.
