Maria “Ria” Van Der Spuy-Groenewald, head of developing digital libraries in South Africa at the University of Pretoria, met with RIC President Carriuolo in the president’s office on March 31.

Among the topics the two discussed were academia, teaching and learning, access to resources and art.

The visit came as a result of Carriuolo’s invitation through Catherine Hanni, vice president of the World Affairs Council of Rhode Island, the organization that coordinated the visit with the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program.

Van Der Spuy-Groenewald also received a tour of Adams Library and a presentation about the library’s digital initiatives. She took notes about software, applications, methodology, metadata design and the Digital Commons repository. She was interested in the content of the digital repository and said that she will take the idea to the University of Pretoria.

Van Der Spuy-Groenewald has invited Carriuolo to visit the university.
