RIC alumni, professor present at international music education conference
RIC music education alumni (from left) Jonathan Cox ’09, Joshua DaPonte ’10, Jennifer Murphy ’10, and Allison Wroe ’09, along with Denise Guilbault, RIC associate professor, presented at the 3rd International Conference on Music Learning Theory in Chicago in August.
The session, “No New Teacher Left Behind: Experiences of Early Career MLT Practitioners in a Professional Development Community,” focused on strategies that support new music teachers through the first few years of their career.
Cox, Daponte, Murphy and Wroe are four of about 20 who participate in the Teacher “Meeting” Group, a music teacher induction group started by Guilbault in 2009. The group was formed to provide support for new teachers in the first year and beyond, to create a community of friends in similar teaching situations, and to encourage the participants’ transformation from mentee to mentor. The group will submit an article for publication based on the conference presentation.
