Three Rhode Island College Wrestlers Earn High Rankings in NEWA
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rhode Island College senior Mike Sugermeyer (Hampden, MA) and juniors Silas Murray (Brentwood, NY) and Brian Nicoll (Plaistow, NH) are ranked in the top six of their respective weight classes, according to the latest New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Individual Rankings.
Sugermeyer, who was recently named to the NEWA Duals All-Tournament Team and the Pilgrim League Wrestler of the Week, is ranked second at 125 lbs. For the season, he is 21-5 with 47 takedowns, eight reversals, 21 escapes, 17 near-falls and four pins.
Murray is ranked fourth at 133 lbs. For the season, he is 15-8 with 42 takedowns, eight reversals, 11 escapes, eight near-falls and one pin.
Nicoll is ranked fourth at 285 lbs. He is 23-6 with 31 takedowns, two reversals, 24 escapes, seven near-falls and a team-leading seven pins.
Under head coach Jay Jones, the Anchormen are 7-14 overall and 4-4 against NEWA opposition. RIC is currently ranked No. 7 in New England.
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will open Pilgrim Wrestling League action at home against Johnson & Wales on Feb. 1 at 7 p.m.
