RIC Wrestlers Sugermeyer, Nicoll Earn All-NCAA Regional Honors
WORCESTER, MASS. – Rhode Island College wrestlers Michael Sugermeyer and Brian Nicoll earned all-NCAA regional honors at the 2013 NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Wrestling Championships, hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute on March 2 and 3.
Sugermeyer (Hampden, Mass.), a senior wrestling at 125 lbs., placed fourth while Nicoll (Plaistow, N.H.), a junior wrestling at 285 lbs., finished sixth.
Sugermeyer went 3-2 to finish the season with a 27-7 record. Nicoll went 3-3 to wrap up the campaign with a 27-9 mark.
“I am very proud of Michael as he was a man on a mission all year long,” said head coach Jay Jones. “His commitment level, hard work and determination cannot be taken away. I wish we had 30 of him in the practice room everyday.”
The championships, which are in the first year of a new format, saw 18 institutions compete. The top three place-finishers advance to the NCAA Division III National Championships.
There were no team scores kept at the meet. Unofficially, the Anchormen finished 15th with 26.5 points. Cortland totaled a score of 133.5 to finish first.
Rhode Island College ends the season with an 11-15 overall record, was 8-5 against New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) opposition and 4-1 in the Pilgrim Wrestling League.
