Kristen Johnson has been named interim head women’s volleyball coach at Rhode Island College. She takes over for former Head Coach Elysce Tackmann, who stepped down earlier this summer, after serving two years as an assistant coach.

“I'm excited to take on this new role and continue to build the program,” Johnson said. “I'm looking forward to working with our returning team and incoming class. It's an honor to be given this opportunity.”

Johnson graduated with a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Rhode Island College in 2011. She closed out her four-year career (2006-09) as an Anchorwoman, having played in 270 sets in 105 matches as a middle blocker. She totaled 242 kills, .066 hitting percentage (.90/game) and 151 blocks (.56/game). Johnson was 10th all-time at RIC in career blocks at the time of her graduation.

As a senior in 2009, she played in 63 games in 28 matches. She totaled 67 kills (1.06/game), a .146 hitting percentage and 59 blocks (.94/game). Johnson was tied for third on the team in blocks.

As a junior in 2008, Johnson played in 109 games in 31 matches. She totaled 109 kills (1.0/game) and 53 blocks (.49/game). Johnson was second on the team in blocks.

As a sophomore in 2007, she played in 71 games in 29 matches. She totaled 55 kills (.77), a .086 hitting percentage, 11 assists (.15/game), 18 digs (.25/game) and 26 blocks (.37/game).

As a freshman in 2006, Johnson played in 27 games in 17 matches, totaling 11 kills (.41/game), eight assists (.30/game), eight digs (.30/game) and 13 blocks (.48/game).

She is a 2006 graduate of East Providence High School. She played three seasons of volleyball with the Townies under Luis Carvalho, who later became her college coach at RIC.

In addition to her coaching duties, Johnson is an elementary education teacher in both the East Providence and Pawtucket school systems.
