PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rhode Island College announces a full lineup of fine art, theatre, dance and music events this fall.

ART

Bannister Gallery opens the season with “Graphic Design From Konkuk University,” an exhibition of graphic art by Korean students, which melds traditional Korean culture with Western communication media. Also on display will be the graphic artwork of Tai Sun Choi, a teacher at the university. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, Sept. 4, at 5 p.m., with a talk by Choi at 6:30 p.m. The exhibit runs through Sept. 26 and is free and open to the public.

Next up are two shows running Oct. 2-24. “Embodied: The Figure in Paint,” mounted in Bannister Gallery, will feature a group of artists who look to the figure for meaning. “Blendings” by Meris Barreto, shown at the same time in the Focus Gallery, combines materials that seem inherently opposite, such as metal with glass, glass with rope and stone with glass. An opening reception for the two shows will be held on Thursday, Oct. 2, at 5 p.m.

From Oct. 30 through Nov. 21, the Bannister Gallery will feature  the work Chinese artist Qigu Jiang in an exhibit titled “Contemporary Ink.” Jiang’s works explore cultural and political freedom. A reception will be held on Thursday, Nov. 13, at 5 p.m.

The final exhibit showcases the artwork of RIC faculty. It is titled “New Art for a New Facility” to honor the Art Department’s new home, Alex and Ani Hall. This exhibit runs Dec. 4-19, with an opening reception on Thursday, Dec. 4, at 5 p.m.

PERFORMING ARTS SERIES

RIC's Fall Performing Arts Series begins on Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 7:30 p.m., when The Senegal St. Joseph Gospel Choir will perform a program of Negro spirituals, traditional African songs and masses in Roberts Hall (admission $35). On Monday, Oct. 27, at 7:30 p.m., award-winning cabaret artist Lauren Fox will present “Laurel Canyon Folkies,” a program of folk music from the 60s and 70s, held in Sapinsley Hall (admission $35).

The RIC Performing Arts Series also features an impossible-to-categorize show – “Tomáš Kubínek – Certified Lunatic and Master of the Impossible.” This production is a medley of comedy, clowning, mime, magic, acrobatics, music and vaudeville on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in Roberts Hall auditorium (admission $35).

A Performing Arts Series favorite, the Muir String Quartet, returns for its 22nd season on Monday, Nov. 17, and will perform the New England premiere of a clarinet quintet by composer/musician Chris Brubeck, son of late jazz great Dave Brubeck, along with works by Hugo Wolf and Claude Debussy. This concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Sapinsley Hall (reserved seating $35).

And on Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 7:30 p.m., two-time Grammy-nominated Seraphic Fire will present a concert of carols, chants, and modern and Renaissance motets, as well as traditional Christmas pieces in Roberts Hall auditorium (admission $35).

THEATRE

RIC student theatrical productions this fall are “Tartuffe,” running Sept. 24-28 in Sapinsley Hall, and “The Little Foxes,” running Nov. 12-16 in the Forman Theatre (admission $15).

DANCE

Fall dance programming focuses on two Rhode Island mainstays – the Island Moving Company, which will be performing ballet on Friday, Oct. 10, and Fusionworks Dance Company, performing modern dance on Friday, Oct. 24. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. in Sapinsley Hall (admission $15).

Student members of the RIC Dance Company will also present their Annual Mini Concert for K-12 Students running Oct. 22-24 at 10 a.m. in Sapinsley Hall (free for K-12 students in Rhode Island and Massachusetts). A second concert by the company will be performed on Dec. 5th and 6th at 7:30 p.m. in Sapinsley Hall.

Both concerts begin at 1 p.m. in Sapinsley Hall (donation $10). “Diva Triple Play” will have a repeat performance at 7:30 p.m.
