Maurano named interim commissioner of higher education
Steven J. Maurano has been appointed interim commissioner of higher education by Frank Caprio, chair of the R.I. Board of Governors for Higher Education. Maurano takes over for Jack Warner, who left to become executive director of the public higher education system in South Dakota.
Maurano has served as associate commissioner for external affairs since joining the Office of Higher Education (OHE), the staff office for the Board of Governors, in November 2006. He came to OHE after a 26-year career in corporate communications and public affairs.
“With so many long-time education leaders in Rhode Island retiring or stepping down at the same time, the board felt that it was important to provide some continuity,” said Caprio. “Steve has been actively engaged in many of the major issues facing the system of public higher education since joining former Commissioner Warner’s team about three years ago, and the board felt he was the best choice to guide the system until a new and permanent commissioner is named.”
A search committee has been formed and is currently reviewing resumes and applications for the commissioner’s position. Caprio said he hopes to have a new commissioner in place by the beginning of the new academic year in September.
