Henry Barnard School cooking club welcomes Chef Evan Percoco
Chef Evan Percoco, seated center, was a recent guest of Henry Barnard School’s cooking club.
Watch out Jamie Oliver! Foodies, the Henry Barnard School after-school cooking club, welcomed Chef Evan Percoco of Bokx 109 restaurant in Newton, Mass., on April 15 to be guest chef at one of its cooking sessions.
The chef collaborated with Foodie advisors, John Arango, Lyn-Su Otto and Vanessa Percoco (Evan’s sister) of Henry Barnard to create a meal that was both nutritious and highlighted specialties of the New England area.
Students worked diligently in groups of four with their Foodie advisors. Evan Percoco facilitated cooking procedures and techniques while discussing his passion for food and the hospitality profession.
The best part of each Foodies class was sitting down to enjoy the fruits (or foods) of the students’ labor. Lobster pot pie topped with rosemary-cheddar biscuits was the main meal. For dessert, the students created whoopie pies.
As the students ate their meals, Chef Percoco presented a slide show highlighting his restaurant and career, which included cooking with a variety of rock stars and celebrities. Also, a chef’s coat was raffled off to a student.
Foodies is one of many after-school clubs that are offered to students during the school year at Henry Barnard. The club, which began two years ago, is currently focusing on the USDA food pyramid as a part of promoting healthy lifestyle choices as well as promoting cooperation and respect among the students, both in the kitchen and around the dining room table.
