Peer Tutor Information​


General Job Description:

Rhode Island College provides tutoring services and support to students in a number of different disciplines across campus. They are available to meet with students in tutorial settings to help them identify learning needs, develop strategies that will result in effective study habits, and build successful techniques for continued progress and excellence in their studies. Tutoring is free to Rhode Island College students in general education courses and available online at


  • Minimum grade of B+ in subject course work; CUM GPA of 3.0
  • Written recommendation from Department Chair or faculty
  • Continued satisfactory evaluations in department​

Tutor Requirements:

  • Mandatory tutor training
  • Meet with OASIS staff; complete student employee paperwork
  • Arrange schedule of set hours with the department for whom tutoring is offered; if tutoring on as-needed basis, contact tutee to set mutually convenient time for meeting
  • Track appointments with tutees
  • Submit time sheet every 2 weeks, signed by supervisor

Tutor Duties and Responsibilities in Tutorial Sessions:

  • Review materials ahead of time to prepare for tutoring session
  • Use professional and confidential manner – be on time
  • Maintain safe and secure learning environment
  • Greet tutees with warmth and respect (ID badges are helpful and available in OASIS) – reference syllabus regarding assignment
  • Listen attentively – best interest of the tutee central to tutorial support
  • Use scaffolding to focus on appropriate place to start
  • Pause occasionally to assess tutee’s ability to understand material in real time
  • Use tutoring hour to reinforce / encourage learning
  • Confirm learning with tutee by reviewing and summarizing at end of meeting
  • Make plan for how the tutee will continue to work on subject going forward​​
