I am delighted to welcome you to the Web site of Rhode Island College (RIC). RIC was established in 1854 as one of the first public normal schools in the nation. In 1920, the college became a college of education, and in 1960 evolved into the master’s level comprehensive college of today.
Throughout its rich history, RIC has always put students first. Our institution has maintained the highest standards in academic programs while retaining a commitment to affordability and accessibility, thereby extending the opportunity to pursue a higher education degree to generations of students, many of whom are leaders in our state, region, and nation. The college is located on a self-contained 180-acre park-like campus in a suburban section of Providence, with ready access to the state’s vibrant and historic capital city as well as to the state’s abundant cultural and environmental resources. We have outstanding theatre and art galleries and easy access to miles of beaches with fresh ocean breezes.
RIC enrolls approximately 9,000 students in a wide spectrum of academic programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Our rich and diverse learning community emphasizes quality teaching. Rhode Island College is especially proud of its dedicated faculty and staff, exceptional opportunities for service and research, access to the latest informational and learning technology, rich athletic tradition, and vibrant campus life. RIC has received longstanding acclaim for its offerings in the performing and fine arts and for its preparation of teachers. The college is also creating a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Center and an Institute for Civic Engagement. The School of Nursing, the School of Social Work, and the School of Management also offer exciting programs. Please visit the school sites and browse a bit.
I hope you will have an opportunity to plan a personal visit to our campus so that you may discover what makes Rhode Island College such a very special place. Until then, I thank you for visiting the College on the World Wide Web.
Sincerely,
Nancy Carriuolo
President
