What To Bring and What to Know

What to Bring

Wear whatever is comfortable for you: Casual clothes and comfortable shoes are recommended. Orientation is a time to relax and to get to know people.

For overnight cycles, you will need linens for a twin bed (or a sleeping bag), a pillow, towel, soap, and other toiletries, as well as a change of clothes for day two. In addition, it is a good idea to have some pocket money with you. However, please do not bring valuables, including cell phones and mp3 players. The use of electronic devices is prohibited during your Orientation program.

What to Know

It is very important that you return the health forms included in your enrollment packet to College Health Services before your Orientation cycle. Students will have a difficult time registering for courses without having met these requirements. Medical records are maintained in strict confidence by the College Health Services.

Keep in mind that each Orientation cycle is restricted to new students at Rhode Island College who have made reservations for that particular cycle. It is required that you make arrangements to attend the program cycle in its entirety, so that you will have a good understanding about life at Rhode Island College.

While there is a fee for Orientation, you do not have to bring this money with you. The fee is charged to your first-semester bill.

As part of the Rhode Island College Community, there are Orientation Rules we Expect each Student to Follow:

Participation

Orientation has been carefully designed just for you, so you are expected to attend all sessions and stay with the program at all times. Remember that you are not permitted to leave campus during Orientation.

Use of Cell Phones

Because of the nature of the activities we have scheduled for you, the use of cell phones is prohibited during your Orientation program. Any emergencies may be directed to 401-456-8201.

Alcohol and Other Drug Use

Rhode Island College believes that substance abuse is incompatible with a culture for learning. Therefore, illegal use is met with very tough sanctions. If you possess or use alcohol or drugs during Orientation, you will be expelled from the program. Even being around alcohol or drugs can get you in trouble - if you are found in a room or outside area where alcohol or drugs are present, you will be disciplined and your parents will be notified, even if you weren't using.

Smoking

For health and fire safety reasons, Rhode Island College is a smoke-free campus. This means that smoking is prohibited in all College buildings, including residence hall rooms. In addition, there are no sales of tobacco products on campus.

When You Can Leave

If you attend an overnight cycle, you must stay on campus until the end of your session (4 p.m. on Day 2) to receive your schedule of classes and identification card for the fall semester.
