Prelaw Preparation

The Department of Political Science houses the Prelaw Preparation Program at Rhode Island College. No specific major or curriculum is required or recommended by law schools as a prerequisite for admission. A selection of liberal arts courses which familiarize students with government, history, law, philosophy and society is as important as one specific major. Some fields of law increasingly require preparation in communication skills, computer technology and other fields such as accounting.

A primary criterion for law school admission is performance on the LSAT. The LSAT combines a standardized test with writing an impromptu essay on a controversial topic. For more information on the LSAT see Outside LinkLaw School Admission Services LSAT/LSDAS Information Book.

Early in their undergraduate program those interested in law school should discuss their curriculum, the particulars of the LSAT and law school application procedures and strategies with the Prelaw Advisor, Dr. John Perrotta.
