150 years and still growing...

Rhode Island College celebrates its sesquicentennial anniversary in grand fashion!

On Friday evening, May 9, 2003 the College launched its yearlong sesquicentennial (150th) celebration with style, fanfare and a few surprises. Over 300 guests attended the black tie event at the Rhode Island Convention Center, including Honorary Chairs Governor and Mrs. Donald L. Carcieri; Senator Jack Reed; Congressman Jim Langevin; Judge Frank Caprio, Chair of the Board of Governors for Higher Education, and many faculty, alumni, and supporters of the institution. The evening began with a silent auction, followed by dinner and a "fashion parade" depicting the various styles of fashion trends throughout the institution's history. A poignant part of the program featured a video presentation of the history of State Home and School - O'Rourke Children Center, which has become a centerpiece of the College's sesquicentennial. After the formal program, attendees had a chance to be the very first to view the RI Treasures Exhibit, sponsored by the Providence Tourism Council, showcasing artifacts and documents from the state's history. The College is featured prominently in the exhibit, with separate displays on the College itself as the state's oldest public institution of higher learning, and the State Home and School Project, one of the oldest orphanages in the country, the grounds of which now comprise the College's east campus. The College also took on the task of developing curriculum workbooks for students visiting the exhibit, and will be showcasing the talents of several theatre students in character portrayals of some of Rhode Island's most prominent historical figures, throughout the run of the exhibit.

Many events, activities and festivities are planned throughout the coming year in celebration of RIC's sesquicentennial anniversary. Keep checking here for more information on events. We look forward to you joining the celebration!
