New Report About Employment Outcomes for Young Adults

A new ICI report - Trends in Employment Outcomes of Young Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, 2004-2011 - shows the trend employment outcomes of young adults 16 to 21 years old and 22 to 30 years in the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Data are from the American Community Survey, the RSA-911, and the National Core Indicators datasets. The report was funded by the Administration on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, Administration for Community Living, US Department of Health and Human Services.

The Annual Disability Statistics Compendium is a web-based tool that pools disability statistics published by various federal agencies together in one place. When working on legislative and other matters relating to persons with disabilities, the Compendium will make finding and using disability statistics easier. The Compendium is designed to serve as a reference guide to government publications.

Employer Resource Guide from the Disability and Employment Community of Practice

This guide was developed to provide both public and private employers, human resource personnel, hiring managers and supervisors with relevant federal, state and local level information around their legal obligations, along with resources that can assist in identifying, paying for, and implementing effective accommodation strategies, in hiring and/or retaining qualified employees who experience a disability.

The Disability and Employment Community of Practice is an online learning destination for public workforce system staff and partners, jobseekers, community-based organizations, grantees, and the business sector, who provide services and programs to people with disabilities and/or other challenges to employment. It is a "one-stop-shop" venue for workforce practitioners to find or share high quality information about how to better provide integrated, seamless, and accessible services and programs to people with disabilities and/or other challenges to employment.

Ten Practices to Promote the Communication Skills of Infants and Toddlers A new resource published by the FPG Child Development Institute, More Than Baby Talk: 10 Ways to Promote the Language and Communication Skills of Infants and Toddlers (2013), by N. Gardner-Neblett and K.C. Gallagher, describes ten practices that early childhood teachers can use to foster language and communication skills among infants and toddlers. The guidelines are based on the latest research findings on optimal adult-child interactions for promoting strong language and communication skills among young children.

The NIDRR-funded Rehabilitation Research and Training Center for Pathways to Positive Futures (Pathways RTC) recently published Youth Advocate to Advocate for Youth: The Next Transition, a guide for young people who have chosen to utilize their lived experience as a mechanism to advocate for positive change. The guide, developed with Youth MOVE National, leads young people through seven stages of transition from owning their own stories to becoming a supportive young adult for their peers.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee released a report, High Expectations: Transforming the American Workforce as the ADA Generation Comes of Age (PDF). The report offers steps to improve the employment of the "ADA Generation" - young men and women who have come of age since the ADA was enacted, and who are now seeking competitive employment.

The Affordable Care Act: How Will it Work and How Will it Affect MCH Populations?

What are the goals of the Affordable Care Act (ACA)? What are the primary mechanisms through which the ACA will meet its goals? What is the potential impact of the ACA on women, children, adolescents, and immigrant families? The HRSA-funded Center for Leadership Education in Maternal and Child Public Health at the University of Minnesota just released a 36-page publication that addresses these questions.

Online Training to Improve Accommodations Decision Making (2013)

The Institute's National Center on Educational Outcomes (NCEO) has launched Online Training to Improve Accommodations Decision Making, a five-module, interactive, multi-media professional development tool with case-based video clips. Through it, educators are coached on best practices in how to select, administer, and evaluate the use of accommodations. NCEO developed the training collaboratively with the state of Alabama, but it can also be used in other states. You will need to set up an account to gain access to the training modules.

NDEAM - October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month

The purpose of National Disability Employment Awareness Month is to educate about disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America's workers with disabilities.
The history of National Disability Employment Awareness Month traces back to 1945, when Congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each year "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week." In 1962, the word "physically" was removed to acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals with all types of disabilities. In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the name to National Disability Employment Awareness Month.
"When I was growing up, many people doubted what I could do just because I was blind. But because I had people in my life who instilled in me an expectation of work and showed me opportunities to be successful, I completed college and became known for what I can do," said Kathy Martinez, assistant secretary of labor for disability employment policy when announcing this year's National Disability Employment Awareness Month theme, which is "Because We Are EQUAL to the Task."

The University of Delaware Leadership Institute offers a select group of future leaders from organizations across the United States and internationally, the opportunity to come together with a fabulous faculty of national experts on progressive supports for people with disabilities.
This week-long, intensive leadership development program is designed for current executive-level leaders and emerging leaders. Participants may work in areas of management or program leadership in organizations that provide, advocate for, or fund supports for people with intellectual/developmental disabilities and their families.
Applications are due by October 28, 2013.

The NIDRR-funded Rehabilitation Research and Training Center on Disability Statistics and Demographics (Stats RRTC) released its September Trends in Disability Employment - National Monthly Update (TIDE). This month's TIDE explores employment trends during August and compares them to last year's data on people with disabilities in the workforce. An archive of TIDE reports is available from the Stats RRTC website.

The National Center for Children in Poverty (NCCP) has published a new report, Parent Engagement from Preschool through Grade 3: A Guide for Policymakers (September 2013) by Sheila Smith, Taylor Robbins, Shannon Stagman, and Disha Mathur. The term "parent engagement" is used to describe parents' efforts to promote their children's healthy development and learning through activities that can be encouraged by educators in child care, preschool and school settings. The report makes the case that effective parent engagement during preschool through grade 3 is a key contributor to children's positive academic outcomes. It presents research, program, and policy information that can inform state initiatives to strengthen parent engagement during these early years.

New Affordable Care Act and Early Learning Webpage

The U.S Department of Education's Administration for Children & Families (ACF) recently launched a new webpage on The Affordable Care Act: What It Means for Children, Families, and Early Childhood Programs. The webpage is designed to help early learning providers answer questions about the upcoming launch of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Health Insurance Marketplace. Open enrollment in the Marketplace starts October 1, with coverage starting as soon as January 1, 2014. To find the information needed to prepare for open enrollment, families and small businesses can visit www.HealthCare.gov or www.CuidadoDeSalud.gov.
