GOAL 1
To insure that all students with disabilities are taught by highly qualified teachers
YEAR 1 – 2002-2003
- Higher Education Coordinating Committee established and convened.
- Gained a common base of knowledge about higher education programs.
- Gained a common base of knowledge about current and future alternate certification programs.
- Developed RIC Faculty Academy Faculty Coordinator job description, hiring process and hired an Assistant Professor.
- Assistant Professor co-teaching a scientific research-based reading class, with the Department Chair of Elementary Education, supervising student teachers in general elementary and special education placements, and teaching a class in student teaching seminars in elementary education.
- Developed Recruitment Coordinator job description, hiring process and hired a Coordinator.
- Recruited three students for the University of Massachusetts’ TVI program.
- Met with URI Education Department leaders and staff and discussed various proposals for Assistant Professor position.
- The Assistant Professor at Rhode Island College accomplished the following:
- Infused differentiated instruction into courses
- Co-taught elementary education courses
- Developing internship and practicum database to allow students to complete pre-service teaching experiences in same school
- Developing database of inclusive settings for clinical experiences
- Developed and conducted a comprehensive survey of recent graduates and current student teachers
- RISIG, RIDE and URI are supporting a .5 FTE Elementary Special Education/General Education Assistant Professor and .25 FTE of an Early Childhood Assistant Professor
- URI has developed, and is currently implementing, a curriculum infusion model proposal
- Eight workshops were co-sponsored for the Faculty Academy for Change
- Co-sponsored URI Early Childhood Institute
- Recruitment coordinator accomplished the following:
- Participated in various recruitment job fairs, high school visits, higher education recruitment activities, educational conferences and parent organization meetings
- Developed a Special Education Display for recruitment events
- Designed a recruitment brochure, specific to Rhode Island
- Conducted a survey of Teacher Assistants interested in becoming teachers
- Provided materials and mailings to prospective teacher pre-service candidates
- Created a recruitment website: www.RISpecialEdCareer.net
- Developed a database of teacher education recruits
- Participated in Personnel Center Recruitment Task Force, Diversity Recruitment and Public Relations committee activities
- Developed a Transfer Guide to assist student transferring to four year programs
- Developed introductory course for University of Massachusetts’ TVI program, to be offered through the Sherlock Center
