University of Massachusetts Boston/NorthEast Regional Center for Vision Education

The Paul V. Sherlock Center on Disabilities through the Rhode Island Department of Education has entered into a regional partnership with the University of Massachusetts Boston. This unique and collaborative effort is designed to recruit, support, and mentor students who are interested in working with children and youths with visual impairments. The graduate level programs, Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments and Orientation and Mobility Specialists for the Blind offer full tuition support to the applicants that meet admission and scholarship requirements. University of Rhode Island

A department of URI's College of Human Science and Services, the Department of Communicative Disorders offers academic and clinical programs that can lead to the following degrees:

• Bachelor of Science in Communicative Disorders
• Master of Science in speech-Language Pathology

As responsible allied health professionals, speech-language pathologist and audiologists treat disorders of communication in a variety of settings including schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and private practice.

University of Phoenix Online

offers a Master of Arts in Education, Special Education, Cross-Categorical. The Master of Arts in Education degree program with specialization in Special Education prepares candidates to be cross categorical special educators. The program is accredited. All courses are offered online 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. Students take 1 class at a time. Each class is 3-6 weeks in length. The program is 43 credits total, which usually takes 2 years. A supervised student teaching experience in special education is incorporated into the degree. Student teaching can be done in RI, but the student must find an appropriate RI classroom with the help of his/her advisor. Students must take the Arizona Educator Proficiency Exam. This means students must commit to travel once during the 2 year program. The student will exit the program certified to teach special education in ARIZONA. To teach in Rhode Island with this degree, the student must apply for certification through the Rhode Island Department of Education's interstate enhanced reciprocity agreement.
