DirectCourse for Agencies

Each agency that supports individuals with developmental disabilities in the state of Rhode Island has the option of accessing DirectCourse content free of charge by utilizing the Sherlock Center facility or at a low cost by purchasing their own facility. A “facility,” as it relates to DirectCourse, refers to a portion of the online platform. The Sherlock Center runs and manages a state-level facility, but agencies also have the option of purchasing their own portion of the platform, also called a facility. The facility isn’t a physical location, but rather a virtual one.

Utilizing the Sherlock Center Facility

The Sherlock Center has contracted with Elsevier to provide a state-wide learning management system that gives learners and agencies access to licensed DirectCourse content from the College of Direct Support (CDS) and the College of Employment Services (CES). This free option allows agencies to register learners for courses created at the state level. Each agency will identify at least one agency point person to serve as the communication liaison between its learners and the state system administrator. The agency point person is responsible for communications around adding, removing, or transferring learners. The agency point person also has the ability to look up learner transcripts and track learner progress. Utilizing the Sherlock Center facility is a free option for agencies in the state.

Purchasing a Facility

Agencies can also opt to purchase their own facility on the Sherlock Center’s learning management system. Because the Sherlock Center and agencies around the state are sharing one platform, this is a cost-effective option for agencies. Agencies that decide to purchase their own facility are able to access all of the licensed CDS and CES course content, create their own courses, upload new content, run reports, and track learners with more specificity. Agencies will have access to an entire learning management system with pre-loaded content, but at a reduced price thanks to cost-sharing!

The cost to purchase a facility is determined by Elsevier depending on the number of learners each agency would like to have access to DirectCourse. The price breakdown is as follows:
Under 10 Learners
10-59 Learners
60-119 Learners
120-199 Learners
200 Learners and Up
Free
$500
$950
$1,950
$2,950
If your agency is interested in purchasing its own facility, please contact Olivia Sullivan with Elsevier.

Adding Learners

Initially and as new employees are hired, agencies will need to add learners to DirectCourse. Agencies that opt to purchase their own facility will add learners directly with their Elsevier account specialist.
Agencies utilizing the Sherlock Center facility will need to complete and submit an Excel spreadsheet to the state system administrator. Updating Learners

Agencies may need to update learner information as changes occur. Please utilize the forms below when you have learner updates and submit to the state system administrator Lindsay Scarpaci.
  • Learner Update Form WORD image 76 kb WORD – When a learner undergoes any changes to their basic information, such as a name or email address change
