The Paul V. Sherlock Center on Disabilities opened the doors to its new site on the college’s east campus with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 20. Attendees had an opportunity to tour the new building following the ceremony. A move date to the new location is pending. The Sherlock Center continues to operate in its current location on the college’s west campus until further notice.
The mission of the Paul V. Sherlock Center on Disabilities is to promote community membership of individuals with disabilities in school, work, and society.
The Sherlock Center is a federally designated University Center for Excellence on Disabilities. The Sherlock Center provides training and information to 25,000 citizens of Rhode Island each year, conducts research, and provides services to individuals with developmental and other disabilities.
The new 11,350 square foot building, located on the Rhode Island College Campus which was formerly part of the Rhode Island State Home and School, has been renovated to include a resource library, training center and professional offices. An addition to the existing building will create a new entry, with a stair and elevator to access both floors.
The $3.3 million project also includes an expanded parking area. The building was renovated with funding from the 2006 Higher Education Bonds.
The staff of the Sherlock Center is grateful to the Governor’s office, the Rhode Island Legislature, the Board of Governors for Higher Education, and the citizens of Rhode Island for their support of this project.
The ceremony will take place on October 20, at 4:00 p.m. on Rhode Island College’s East Campus adjacent to the center. Parking will be available across from the building.
