College of Direct Support in Rhode Island

A workgroup of Rhode Island agency professionals, leaders, and stakeholders has developed a career ladder for Direct Support Professionals in the state. Courses from the College of Direct Support have been organized into three online modules, creating a progression for Direct Support Professionals to increase their skills and knowledge.

DSP Certification Program

The first online program for Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) is designed for both new and experienced DSPs in the state of Rhode Island. This program gives individuals a solid foundation for staff supporting individuals in the community. The DSP Certification program will take approximately 3 months to complete, with approximately 34 hours of online coursework through DirectCourse, three 2-hour in-person sessions, and three fieldwork assignments. The fieldwork assignments are expected to be completed prior to the in-person sessions and learners have 2-3 options from which to select for each assignment. Please download the DSP Certification Program User Guide (24 kb (WORD) for more information.

Additional Information

The DSP Certification Program will begin on September 1, 2017. Learners will complete the online learning in three segments. Between each online segment, learners will attend in-person sessions. The dates for the in-person sessions are as follows: All in-person sessions will be held at the Community Provider Network of Rhode Island, located at:
