Purpose:

The Consent Decree and the Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) rule mandate that Rhode Island develop a person-centered system of supports for individuals who have developmental disabilities. In the past few weeks the Division of Developmental Disabilities and the Conversion Institute at the Sherlock Center have hosted a series of public forums to solicit input re: how to implement the various components of a person-centered system. One of the most critical components of such is a system is the development and training of conflict-free facilitators and/or case managers. These facilitators will have responsibility for: Description:

To that end, the Sherlock Center is offering a three credit Rhode Island College course. This course will be used to develop and pilot the training materials that will be used with the conflict- free facilitators and/or case managers. The course will provide an overview of research and evidence-driven strategies that are important in implementing person-centered thinking. The syllabus will include the following topics:
The Sherlock Center is offering two sections of this course. (a) Each section will meet six times. (b) Participants will be expected to do some writing and some piloting of course materials with the people to whom they provide support. (c) A final meeting or two will be scheduled later in the summary (at the convenience of the group) for presentation and review of the materials developed by the participants.
